Hello all!

Well, hello all,
let's get the ball rolling with the new Blog set up for our very own GDOA.

OK, why do I not have any olives this year.
One reason may be that I pruned very heavily after last year's harvest and I suspected that it would consequently be a very poor harvest. However, the trees were covered with blossom in Spring which did surprise me. What was a bigger surprise is that not one of them pollinated. Water was not have been a factor as I did have a reasonable supply, and used it.
Any clues?

  2. Yeh..Well we know he's naughty. But maybe it was the weather. I lost a lot of flowering this season and I put it down to tree stress (water) and the bad weather around that time. In past years the weather extremes missed my farm, but not this year. My crop is down to about 6-8 tonnes I think. No picual to see at all though. Ciao Steve P.

  3. And I thought I was technically savvy! I wrote a comment but it seemed to get lost. Anyway, we also lost flowers (went brown) in a cold snap in December and the same happened to a much larger extent a couple of seasons ago. I frequently get asked the same question that Trevor asks when I go to markets. People get lots of flowers but no fruit. I assume it is pollination but that can't be the case for Trevor. While I'm at it, did anyone else lose fruit after the heatwave? We did - about a week later. There was a green carpet under the most heavily laden trees.

  5. When I was at Torquay market recently a couple of UK backpackers stopped by to talk and they pointed me to an Australian government website called harvest trail. I just went on and saw a pdf file (186 pages) that gives lots of information about an Australia-wide harvest trail that backpackers can join. I didn't see olives on the trail and wonder if this is something the AOA should be chasing up for us. Any views?

  6. You're right Joan, I looked up the site and no mention of olives as far as I can tell. The AOA needs to follow this up.

  7. I'm really only trying this out - I have no idea what I'm doing with all this blogging. If this turns up I'll be pleasantly surprised.

  10. Ah yes, I see it now at the end of each entry. I guess it's there if I (or anyone else) wants to delete that particular comment. We're all learning this new techo stuff. Fun isn't it?

  11. It was depressing yesterday walking round my grove - most of the trees are black with scale. Is white oil really the only solution to this?
